Public Notice: Museum of Florida History Update

TALLAHASSEE –

Due to inclement weather and unforeseen events, the Museum of Florida History will continue to remain closed until fall 2015 as part of the ongoing renovation project on the plaza level of the R. A. Gray Building. Florida’s History Shop and The Egg Express café remain open.

Stand-alone exhibits at the Department of State are available for viewing during the Museum’s extended closure. Exhibits that remain open for public viewing include:

  • Highwaymen Paintings:The Florida Highwaymen is a collective name given to a small group of African-American painters from Ft. Pierce who began painting Florida landscapes in the late 1950s. These young artists developed their own individual techniques, creating unique depictions of Florida. This exhibit is open in the Museum of Florida History lobby.

  • A Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Sister-State Relationship between the State of Florida and Wakayama, Japan.  Exhibited works include painting, pottery, photography and more. This exhibit is open in the Gallery for Innovation and Arts, (First floor, R. A. Gray Building) through August 31, 2015.

For visitors and residents seeking a museum experience, the Department of State manages two other museum properties in Tallahassee currently open to the public:

  • The Knott House Museum is a historic home built in 1843. Restored to its 1930s appearance, it is located at 301 East Park Avenue in Tallahassee, Florida. For more information, visit: museumoffloridahistory.com/about/sites or call 850.922.2459.
