Tom Petty’s artistic achievement is indisputable. For almost four decades, Petty has been a leading figure on the American music scene. Individually and with others, he has sold more than 60 million albums and is one of the most recognized and sought-after musicians in the nation and world. In 2002 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, whose website identifies Petty’s artistic contribution by noting that he and the band “did their part to revitalize rock in the mid-to-late Seventies.” Few American artists have had a greater impact on the course of contemporary music than Florida’s Tom Petty. He continues to sell out concert venues around the world, and he has been a featured participant in some of the most significant global musical events of the past several decades.
