Secretary Browning Announces New Exhibit Honoring Black History Month

Artwork by Kelvin Hair featured in the 22nd Floor Capitol Gallery

Tallahassee, Florida –

Secretary of State Kurt Browning today announced the opening of a new exhibit honoring Black History Month in the 22nd Floor Capitol Gallery. The exhibit features artwork by Florida artist Kelvin Hair who was selected by Governor Rick Scott as this year’s Black History Month artist. The exhibit will be on view through March 29, 2012.

“I am proud to help share the artwork of talented artist Kelvin Hair with all of the visitors to the 22nd Floor Capitol Gallery,” said Secretary Browning. “I expect that this exhibit will help increase his fan base, which already recognizes his imagination and overall artistic talents.”

Artist Kelvin Hair shares his love and passion for art by teaching art for the Children's Home Society in Fort Pierce and Better Day at Macedonia Church in Gifford. He also teaches a few select students at his home studio. All lessons and classes are free. Hair’s philanthropy also extends beyond the studio. He has donated paintings to the Navy Seal Museum, United Way and many other charitable organizations.

Hair is a lieutenant and 23-year veteran of the St. Lucie County Fire Department. He is also the son of original Highwayman Alfred Hair.

The new exhibition is part of the Division of Cultural Affairs’ Capitol Complex Exhibition Program and can be seen on the 22nd Floor of the Florida Capitol. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Florida Department of State’s Division of Cultural Affairs at 850.245.6470.
