Viva Florida Announces #DiscoverNWFL Campaign

Tallahassee –

Encouraging visitors to socially share gems found within the Northwest Florida region, the Florida Department of State announces the #DiscoverNWFL campaign, showcasing the rich heritage and diverse historic landmarks beyond the famous shores of the popular travel destination. Boasting a plethora of cultural activities, Viva Florida Northwest Florida – created in 2014 as a part of the statewide Viva Florida campaign to promote Florida’s history and culture – offers numerous museums, sites and events, all perfectly poised between Pensacola and Tallahassee.

“There is much to discover in Northwest Florida,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner.  “The hashtag campaign, #DiscoverNWFL, provides an excellent opportunity for visitors and residents alike to join in on the conversation and share their exciting experiences.”

Guests ready to #DiscoverNWFL can climb to the top of one of five historic lighthouses in the region, visit parks and refuges to spot incredible birds and wildlife, indulge in Fresh from Florida seafood like world-renowned Apalachicola oysters on the half-shell, experience the vibrancy of local artists within art galleries, be immersed in history at museums and travel back in time at one of four historic forts.

Dating back 12,000 years, when the Native American’s first inhabited Florida, the state’s rich landscape is unlike anywhere else in the world. From time-traveling to yesteryear with re-enacted Colonial life stories to experiencing history at Native American mounds, there are many opportunities to experience Northwest Florida’s storied past firsthand at historic and archaeological sites. Florida's Gulf coast beckons with hundreds of miles of coastline showcasing maritime heritage sites. The gardens and parks in the region are unique places to hike, bike, paddle, learn and breathe in the atmosphere of the real Florida. The area is also home to more than 45 museums covering arts, science, and history.

Spreading the word by tagging #DiscoverNWFL in posts, visitors discover that Northwest Florida provides her sun-kissed guests with much more than meets the eye. The campaign engages socially-minded individuals with opportunities to win getaways to the region throughout 2014.
