The City of Gainesville

Alachua County

Russell Etling, Cultural Affairs Manager

The Cultural Affairs Division of the City of Gainesville’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department began in 1979. Its mission to support the city and department’s mission has remained strong by providing, promoting and supporting arts, culture and historic sites in Gainesville. The division seeks to nurture and increase the cultural vitality of the regional arts community, increase creative opportunities for all residents everywhere, boost Gainesville’s reputation as an even more attractive place to live, work and visit and  to increase its level of cultural stewardship for the arts in the region.

Because of DCA...

The City of Gainesville has been able to improve our communitiy's quality of life and economic well-being.

Creating the 352ArtsRoadmap, a professionally facilitated cultural planning process for our community, would not have been possible without the support of DCA. The process opened up an ongoing dialogue between the City of Gainesville and University of Florida to integrate arts and culture collaborations into our respective master plans. The level of community engagement also affirmed the community’s passion for the arts, increasing its level of cultural funding for cultural facilities through a portion of a voter-supported eight-year 1/2 cent sales tax initiative. This cultural plan included an initiative promoting the City of Gainesville’s 352walls mural program. To date, we have created nearly 40 works of art through 352walls and inspired nearly 100 additional murals.
