Secretary Detzner Designates Main Street Crestview as Florida Main Street Program of the Month

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –

Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced today Main Street Crestview has been designated the November 2018 Florida Main Street Community of the Month. Communities are selected based on their development achievements and participation in the Florida Main Street Program.

“For more than 20 years, Main Street Crestview has worked hard to preserve its history and revitalize its downtown,” said Secretary Detzner. “Today, Crestview has one of the most charming downtowns in the state and hosts a number of successful community events.”

Much of Crestview’s growth and success can be attributed to the emergence of railroad systems in the late 1800s when the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad company opened its railway line between Pensacola and Apalachicola. Shortly after, W.B. Wright opened the Yellow River Railroad, a 26-mile railway system between Crestview and Florala, Alabama, and Crestview became a popular meeting spot for travelers leading to an influx of people in the community.

In 1916, Crestview became an incorporated city. The city is located along the Old Spanish trail, which opened in 1929 and extends from St. Augustine to San Diego.

Crestview was designated as a Main Street in 1997, and has completed many successful projects and continues to strive for excellence in their downtown, including the restoration of their Main Street streetscape. Crestview also holds many events throughout the year. Some of their most popular events include the Annual Fall Festival and the Strawberry Festival.

In January, Crestview will be hosting the Florida Main Street Winter Quarterly meeting, where Main Street communities from across the state will gather together to participate in educational workshops and training.
