Kitchens and Food Preparation

It is sometimes said that the kitchen is the heart of a home. From gathering around the cooking fire to family dinners around the kitchen table, the place where the cooking is done often functions as the hub of a society or household.

Our four museum sites feature a variety of cooking spaces that span centuries of traditions and styles. At Mission San Luis, Apalachee and Spanish cooking methods and styles both existed as well as melded together to form something new.

Our two historic homes, the Knott House and The Call-Collins House at The Grove, both have collections that illustrate the role of the kitchen and its utensils in household life. Similarly, the farmhouse kitchen in the Museum of Florida History offers a reconstructed look at what life on a rural Florida farm might have been like in the early 20th century.
