Florida Folklife 40th Anniversary

"Folklore is the boiled-down juice, or pot-likker, of human living."

- Zora Neale Hurston

Folklore is an ever-evolving product of the shared human experience. Folklife is deeply rooted in Florida, and characterized by breathtaking diversity -  a rich tapestry comprised of a wide variety of customs and traditions. For the past 40 years, the Florida Folklife Program has documented, preserved and shared the folk culture of Florida and its people, extending what constitutes “folk,” by recognizing the continuity and change of our culture over time, while showing the value of the “boiled-down juice” of human living.

In honor of Florida Folklife's 40th anniversary in 2019, we are pleased to share some of the many stories, traditions and people that have helped shape Florida's unique cultural landscape. Take a moment to learn more about the folklorists who have worked tirelessly to capture Florida's folk traditions, and the artists who have shared their knowledge with us.
