Avoid Adhesives & Fasteners

Residue from tape.

Avoid:

  • Pressure sensitive tape
  • Glue
  • Other adhesives
  • Rubber bands
  • Staples
  • Paper clips
  • Other fasteners

These can all damage paper, books and photos.

Even self-stick notes might leave an adhesive residue that can attract damaging dirt and dust.

Plastic clips can substitute for metal fasteners, but can still damage paper fibers, and so should be used sparingly and carefully.

If taping is unavoidable, use an archival quality mending tape available from archival supply vendors.

Damage from paperclip.
