FLYP 50th Anniversary
Florida Library Youth Program
Happy 50th Anniversary FLYP!
FLYP50 celebrates the 50th year of the Florida Library Youth Program.
Over 146 million youth and families have enjoyed and learned about the library since the program’s inception.
Each year, library staff present a specific summer theme to tie books and programs together. For a list of past themes, please visit the FLYP Summer Reading Themes and Manuals webpage.
Patricia Blanco discusses summer reading program memories:
The library has been a part of my life for such a long time that it’s hard for me to choose which memories to share. I find that each moment teaching and laughing is precious. I engage with youth, from preschool to high school, and a lot of my students stick around for a long time. So if I had to pick a particular moment to share, it would be Graduation Day. It’s just something that is so special for the educators, the parents and the students. The struggles and hard work finally pay off and the looks on my students’ faces as they put on their caps and gowns is incredible. Graduation is a rite of passage, a transition from childhood to adulthood and a memory that I am proud to share with them. I am grateful that the library was there to help guide them on their way.
Help us celebrate 50 years of the history and creativity of the Florida Library Youth Program by using our FLYP50 Toolkit.
